ak. rocker.

I was in Best Buy the other day and I came across what looked like a car seat attached to big plastic rails, and I'm thinking, "Okay, I'm not usually interested in car seats, but I have to know what this is." So I asked a Best Buy guy who told me, of course it wasn't a car seat. How could you put that in your car? "Good point, Best Buy guy. So what is it?" A rocking chair, he says. So now I'm thinking, "Oh, right, of course, a rocking chair. Um, wait. Why would anyone want a rocking chair that looks like a car seat?"

ah. ha!
Turns out there's an answer: playing video games. Of course, you don't need something that looks like a car seat to play video games, but it is kind of cool looking and fits the motif for race games and fighter games. And it's low to the ground, so you get a good gamer's eye vantage of your TV. And it rocks so you can, um, rock. Well, I don't need to rock when I play games, but it can't hurt to have that feature.

unusual. attributes.
Not that I'm complaining, but the rocker has some other unusual attributes. Like "Grip-Zone teeth for gripping the ground on sand, snow or dirt." (Did I mention the chair is indoor/outdoor?) Not sure how much use this is. Even if you're playing a snowboarding game, I don't think you'd want to actually play it in snow. The chair can also rock all the way back, which, if you did that would mean you'd be looking at the ceiling. Other than falling backward in chagrin when I die, I don't see how useful this is, either.

size. cost.
The chair is modestly priced at $79 and seems like it's pretty sturdy. I also saw someone selling a pair of red AK Rockers on eBay for a $60 starting bid, so maybe you can get them cheaper. The only real problem I see is that they're large and don't fold up, so not sure where you'd store them. They don't seem like the kind of thing you'd leave out in the living room. Since they're indoor/outdoor, I guess you could always store them outside...

I saw these in Best Buy as well and thought "how ridiculous"

I sat down in it and found it surprisingly comfortable. If I didn't play console games from my computer chair, I'd pick one of these up on ebay in a second.

Would be even cooler if it had some speakers built in and you could plug your rear channels into it and a bass shaker would be fun too.

Yeah, there are all kinds of ways to "improve" the chair. I don't know, I think it's cool just the way it is. Simple and easy to use.

I think they would be best in a room/corner that's just for playing video games. That way, the chairs are always ready for you. If my boyfriend and I hadn't already set up his "cave" (boy-room to play video games, smoke, drink, and whatnot) I would have gotten those for him.

They are cool.

Huh? Someone must have stole the padding out of the one I sat in; I thought it was awful. With all of that plastic bulkiness and lack of padding you would figure they would throw in a speaker, but no.

Only a real gamer can truly appreciazte the comfort of this chair. Anyone knocking it's usefulness obviously hasn't suffered from neck cramps while playing their video games.

As a real gamer, I have searched awhile for a revival to teh video game chairs of old. And now I have found it. If you absolutely need a cupholder just get a low table to sit next to it.

Costco carries these for close to $60. They are pretty comfortable and I think they go great in a "bachelor pad" or w/kids...men--same thing! In that kind of setting there is no need to fold them up and store them. Just let people sit in them whether they are playing or not! And how many times have you lost or done something stupid and thrown yourself back on the coach or the floor---yeah that would be what the rocking feature is for!

Saw 'em at Costco - bought two of them. They will be perfect for ancillary chairs in my media room. they will also be quite handy for general seating. Quickly modified them by inserting some memory foam in the headrest - awesome upgrade!

I bought a couple of these chairs last week and I love them. I've always preferred sitting or laying low when watching TV or playing video games.

But the reason I'm writing is because I wanted to comment on some of the things that other people thought were puzzled by or otherwise thought ridiculous.

With respect to it being an "indoor/outdoor" chair... Well, I think they would be great to use instead of a fold up beach-type chair. True, these don't fold and they're a little heavier, but that's the trade off, I guess. I could see myself lugging them out to the beach, the park, parades, little league games, etc.

For many years, my friends and I are part of that fanatical movie fan base that likes to wait for hours (or sometimes days) in line to see certain movies on opening day. We're going to be the envy of everyone at the Star Wars opening in Hollywood in 2006! (I'll wave to you on TV.)

Lastly, someone asked why you would want to be able to recline all the way back because then you would be looking at the celing. Well, as soon as I tried all the reclining positions in the store, I knew that this chair would do great double duty as a sex chair. My girlfriend and I have tried it out and you would not believe how many different sex acts/positions you can attempt. And don't forget -- it's a rocker. If you only use this chair to sit in, you're not getting your money's worth!

I happened upon it in Best Buy myself last night, and gave it a try. I thought it was uncomfortable, tho the rocking onto your back is a kind of cool aspect, if pointless.

But I'd just get one, if I did, for an easily move-able living room chair (my home has the eclectic look), so maybe it's just wonderful for playing games.

I was trying to figure out how to modify a real sport car seat for my PC gaming center until the AK Rocker came along. Now I have created a custom AK chair that sits elevated on modified office chair and attached a flat padded subwoofer which is hidden underneath the seat cover - BASS in the ASS :) Then I attached a pair of rear speakers near the head rest - totally ROCKS!

You will notice many of these chairs on eBay. There is definitely a problem with the design of how they go together. I've picke up two of them and have been experimenting with increasing the support underneath to prevent the seat from pushing outward the side rockers that eventually makes the chair fall apart.

I just bought one from best buy. I'll see how it holds up. I can always return it if it has problems. but I loved the way it felt when I was in their little gaming section.

re: Stability

I just got mine this weekend for father's day and noticed they had new/additional instructions which included "Power Straps" that tied the bottom of the base together. You may want to call the company and ask about that?

Definitely needs more foam.

Got one in my living room now...LOVE IT. Perfect design for my legs and back...takes off all the pressure. Not convinced it needs more padding. Speakers or rumble pack would be cool but I ain't complaining because it wasn't expensive.

This thing kills any other design (banana seats).

It's possible to use it as a tobaggan, if you use it backwards. Try laying the rocker all the way back and sit on the part where you would place your back, with your legs coming off the head of the chair. Then grab the shoulder supports. Launch yourself down a white slope then WEEEEEEE!!!!

The ergonomics on this seat comes close to what a good car seat can provide for your back. Its a steal for $80. Much better for your back than sitting on the floor or couch while playing video games.

Well I'm getting one for christmas. The one thing that really sold me was no arms. Playing guitar can be really hard in any regular chair because the arms get in the way of the neck and back of the guitar. With a chair like this, the problem is solved. So I'm getting it for the gaming and guitar side of life.

I have one of these. I mounted a 5 dollar swinging drink holder on the side. The kind you would find in a boat. I can rock back and forth....even all of the way back, and my beer stays level. Works like a charm...

Power Straps solve the splaying problem. Perfect ergonomics for sitting in front of the High Def and shooting Nazis on Call of Duty. Back saver. As previously mentioned, good guitar chair as well. Have my Classical Yamaha right next to it.

See you on the 360

I just had to see what other people were saying about this piece of garbage. I just bought one at Best Buy and I couldn't believe what I found in the box! They didn't have one on display, so I should have known something was up. For $20 this would be great. It's cheaply made, looks terrible and is not comfortable, especially on the back of your calves. Horrible. Don't waste your money.
